Robert Barnwell Rhett is best known as an extreme secessionist politician. He was a politician with a deep pro-slavery stance. He was nicknamed as the ?Great Secessionist? for his great contributions to the state of South Carolina?s Ordinance of Secession which was passed in 1860. He was initially elected as a US Senator, but he resigned the post and was later elected as a Confederate
Congressman.
