The South Carolina Aquarium opened on the historic Charleston Harbor in May 2000. Its collection boasts of more than 60 exhibits that are found throughout the Aquarium focusing on the Appalachian Watershed?s 5 major regions. These are the Mountains, the Piedmont, the Coastal Plain, the Coast and the Ocean. Its exhibit space regularly changes to showcase the Secrets of the Amazon that display a wide range of plants, animals, and other habitats from the Amazon River basin.

The South Carolina Aquarium also houses its own 4D Theatre where visitors are given the chance to take their one-of-a-kind adventure. Other features and areas to watch out for are the Saltmarsh Aviary, Touch Tank, the Great Hall, Camp Carolina, and the Toddler Cove.
