The Unitarian Church in Charleston was originally intended to house the Circular Congregational Church, then known as the Society of Dissenters, when their original building proved to be inadequate for their group?s size. They started constructing for the building in 1772, but when the Revolutionary War began in 1776, their almost complete structure was reduced to something damaged again. It was only completed in 1787 when they also dedicated it officially.

The Unitarian Church in Charleston currently houses a congregation of Unitarian Universalists. It was only when some of the original congregation members became Unitarians around 1817, when the church was started to have a different leaning.

Declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1973, the Unitarian Church in Charleston still hosts services regularly.
