The Bear Butte State Park is known for it unique mountain formation. Though implied in the name, it does not have a flat-topped "butte." With the Lakota name "Mato Paha" or Bear Mountain, this landmark was born due because of the formation of igneous rocks on Black Hills millions of years ago.

Native Americans put much sacred value to this lone mountain. A lot of them believe that the mountain is a chosen place where they could communicate with the creator through prayers and visions. On the mountain's trees, colorful cloths and pouches represent all the prayers that have been offered by the worshippers. These offerings must be respected and left undisturbed.

The Bear Butte State Park also holds much historical value as it became the location for the gathering of certain Indian nations aiming to promote the advancement of the white settlers into Black Hills.

It's most popular visitor is known to be George A. Custer. He was able to verify the rumors regarding the existence of gold in Black Hills when he led an expedition participated in by a thousand people.

Each year, especially during summer, thousands of visitors visit its ceremonial area and enjoy its recreational benefits. It offers basic campsites, guided hikes, and interpretative programs.
