Originally name as the Gold Hill Lode the Big Thunder Gold Mine was discovered in 1882. Krupp and Engle were two German immigrants who started the mining work then did not know each other when they first came to the Keystone area but since both of them speak the same language they recently became partners and started mining high on the hill where an outcrop of indicator minerals lies. The two then started to move downhill to where the current mine location is.

In the present day, visitors will actually see the mining museum which is an exact replica of the Tykoon Gold Mill which was constructed on the Big Thunder property free of admission. The museum displays different authentic equipment that was used back in the days and the largest collection of mining equipment when the gold mine was made.

The Big Thunder Gold Mine has preserved the authenticity of the mining area which many would enjoy touring and learning from. You will be guided accordingly by the very knowledgeable guides and fun activities that will take you back in time.
