South Dakota?s first and largest state park, the Custer State Park, is a 71,000-acre land comprised of hills and plains located at Black Hills, South Dakota. It was founded in 1912 and named after Lt. Colonel George Custer. This state park and wildlife reserve is home to thousands of flora and fauna.

The park is famous for its thousand-strong bison herds who roam the hilly grasslands. Bighorn sheep, mountain lions, mountain goats, elks, mule deer, and pronghorn antelopes also call this wilderness their home. The park is also famous for its ?begging burros?; herds of wild donkeys who roam the lands and approach passing cars to beg for food. This sight has become instant attraction among park goers. Many visitors bring extra food for the purpose of feeding these hooved beggars. Aside from the wildlife, the park is famous for its scenic drive along the Needles Highway and Wildlife Loop.
