The Hugh Glass Monument is a simple commemoration of the wondrous event that took place in the town now known as Lemmon back in 1823. Hugh Glass, an adventurer who was a part of a group of an expedition that was traveling in the area, was mauled by a grizzly bear in the spot where the monument stands. He survived the attack and was able to get himself to Fort Kiowa, 200 miles away from the attack site, by crawling. This story made this man well known and celebrated by locals. Today, there are also tons of fictional accounts based on Glass? story.

Although the Hugh Glass monument is fairly simple, it is still deemed as a historical site and a tourist attraction by South Dakota.
