Officially known as the ?National Music Museum: America?s Shrine to Music and Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments?, the National Music Museum was founded in the University of South Dakota in 1973, with aims of learning more about music and its long standing history. It is a recognized museum by the American Association of Museums, and has been dubbed by the National Music Council as a ?Landmark of American Music?.

However, aside from American music and musical instruments, the National Music Museum is also where folks can find and view over 13,500 musical instruments and other memorabilia from all over the world. Some of which are ancient and historically significant, restored and preserved so it can continue to represent and show the younger generations of music?s importance in history and society.
