The Spirit Mound Historic Prairie was established in 2002. It is so named because the primitive Indians from Great Plains considered it the home of dangerous spirits. The Spirit Mound was a private property for so many decades, causing the site to be in a state of degradation.

In 1868, the white men were the first settlers in the area, making it a farm and a livestock grazing site. The site was owned by 5 different owners. The site is composed of buildings not less than 20, soybean fields, a feed lot, several roads, corn fields, 5 miles of fence, and 1,500 trees.

In 1986, concerned citizens organized the Spirit Mound Trust, which aimed at the preservation and conservation of the site. $600,000 was awarded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund and they were able to acquire the land.

In 2001, the site, a total of 320 acres was then in the hands of the state. A handful of Native American leaders contradicted the ?sacrilege? of the land, but to no avail. Come and see the Spirit Mound Historic Park!
