The Hunter Museum of American Art?s collection ranges from Colonial to present time and visiting museum is also akin to visiting a historical site as the museum?s location is a circa 1970?s building with a contemporary feel, thanks to its glass-and-steel structure. Besides artworks, sculpture, and paper artifacts, the museum?s collection also includes modern studio glass works of art as well as furniture. Artists whose works are featured by the museum include those made by Duane Hanson, Robert Henrie, Louise Nevelson, Childe Hassam, Robert Rauschenberg, Mary Cassatt, Andy Warhol, Winslow Homer, Helen Frankenthaler, and Thomas Cole.

One of the most popular events held at the site is its annual flower show, is co-organized by the Garden Club of Lookout Mountain, which is part of the nationwide association Garden Club of America. The 2011 edition of the event challenges floral designers to create masterpieces that match floral arrangements featured in almost 2 dozen artworks from the museum?s collection.

The in-site dining area, the Palate Bistro & Caf?, is undergoing renovation as of early 2011.
