The Moccasin Bend National Archeological District is popular for being a well-preserved, compact, and diverse site for archeological remains. As a whole, it indicates the pivotal trade status, economics, and political importance of Chattanooga. The district also holds evidences pertaining to the occupation of Native American groups during the Mississippian, Woodland, and Archaic periods.

Further exploration of the site is promoted by the discovery of Spanish gift and trade items dating back from the 16th century. Other important earthworks found here are those included in the Civil War which can be linked to the Battle of Chattanooga.

With evidences of human habitation up to 12,000 years, the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District is among the most unique entities in the National Park Service System.
