The Carter House is considered to be one of the most important and popular historical attractions in the state. Built by Mr. Fountain Branch Carter in 1830, the Carter House had been involved in one of the most violent battles of the Civil War. During the Battle of Franklin, the Carters had used their home’s cellar as their hiding place. One of the most striking sights in the house-turned-museum would be the more than one thousand bullet holes sprinkled all over the house’s structure, a testament to its bloody history.

Now registered as a National Historic Landmark, it serves both as a memorial not just to the state’s beloved Carter Family but also for all the famous and unsung heroes whose lives had been lost in battle.
