Lookout Mountain has always been a tourist destination, even right after the Civil War. People wanted to get to the peak to see where the legendary ?Battle above the Clouds? took place. However, due to the steep climb and the expensive toll fee, many were discouraged.

The Incline was first conceptualized during the railroad boom in 1880s. Plans to develop a hotel on the summit of Lookout Mountain also brought in speculations to build a railroad that will bring people up.

Built in 1895, The Incline conquers the 72.7% of inclination of Lookout Mountain. On the summit, visitors can get a stunning view of the city of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River. People can also visit the Battles for Chattanooga Electric Map and Museum and Point Park while at the peak, after a ride from the Incline.
