The Lost Sea is one of the series of caves known as the Craighead Caverns. It was discovered in 1905 by Ben Sands, a thirteen year-old boy who frequently played in the cave. The boy found it by crawling through a small hole.
Explorations later on say that there are several rooms in the cave that are filled with water. Some areas weren?t explored, so an end or edge to the lake wasn?t found. This has caused the Lost Sea to be declared as the largest underground lake for a long time. Today, it is the second largest in the world.
The Lost Sea opened as a tourist attraction in 1963 and still operates and is open for tours and visits today.
