It all started as thousands of marbles, rocks and metal pieces forming unique landscaping features on concrete and redwood. When the front and the backyard of the house were completely covered, John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer, formally started the Beer Can House. He turned to the house and began adding aluminum siding, or what we call aluminum beer can siding. Over the next 18 years, the house disappeared under a cover of flattened beer cans. Now, beer cans stand not only as a decoration, but as something functional as well. Garlands made of cut beer cans hanging from the roof edges not only made the house sing in the wind, but also lowered the family's energy bills.

John Milkovisch said the the Beer Can House was just an enjoyable pastime, and so he also enjoys hearing the people’s reaction when they get to have a glimpse of the house.

The house and landscape are adorned with many different types of beer that John, himself, drank.
