The Grand 1894 Opera House is one of the oldest and fully operational opera houses in the entire United States.It is the home for a lot of performances done by local theatre and opera groups. The opera house incorporates the unique and interesting Romanesque Revival Style of architecture which is rarely seen in most of the modern buildings and opera houses around the country.

The Grand 1894 Opera House was originally established in 1894 by Henry Greenwall who raised $100,000 for the construction of this historic opera house. While the effort initially began with Henry Greenwall, various business men and affluent families from around Galveston, Texas also sponsored the construction of the opera house.

The Grand 1894 Opera House is more than just a place to catch plays and operatic pieces as it also supports the performing arts and introduces the local children to the greatness of the opera and the theatrics.

This historic opera house has seen a lot of history in the town of Galveston. It has also survived several storms and two powerful hurricanes that struck the area - Hurricane Alicia and Hurricane Carla. The Grand 1894 Opera House has also seen its shares of loss. Through the decades the opera house has seen several phases where it was unused.

The Grand Opera House of Galveston was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and features a variety of well loved plays, operatic pieces and performances from a wide array of artists. Some of the plays that they feature includes the classics such as ?Wizard of Oz? and ?Fiddler on the Roof.?
