The Lubbock Lake Landmark is very popular for being the water resource for the people in the Southern High Plains during the 1930s. When the lake went dry, the place was unkempt until the city of Lubbock decided to revive the underground spring.

In 1939, the group from the West Texas Museum was the first to explore the site and excavate. After years of excavations, there were discoveries of bison kills from the Folsom Period, which was estimated to be 10, 800 or 10, 300 years old. It was later identified that the bison kill was from a Paleo-Indian group.

Presently, the Lubbock Lake Landmark is marked as a natural history preserve. It is also used as a field laboratory for geology, radiocarbon and soils studies. Excavations are permitted once a year by several excavation groups. Also, the Museum of Texas Tech University is actively involved for 65 years for the preservation, research, discovery and education of the Landmark.

To provide more education to the public, special programs are being offered. These programs are categorized into three parts: the public programs, the school programs and the educator programs. The public programs are available for the community in all ages. These programs are free of charge, otherwise a fee is provided by the event organizer.

On the other hand, the school programs are geared towards school children and young students so they may learn the history of the landmark. A variety of entertaining and educational events are prepared for the children, such as the artifact boxes and archeology history so children get more involved in the preservation of the historical site. Educator programs on the other hand, are for teachers who want to immerse themselves on the landmark?s historical background through workshops and seminars.

The Lubbock Lake Landmark is currently managed by the National Historic and State Archeological Landmark.
