The official name of the museum is the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum and it was built in the 1920?s by the artist-slash-educator herself. The museum?s impressive collection of artworks is housed in a historical home that boasts of exquisite Spanish Colonial Revival architecture.

It is the state?s first museum dedicated to modern art, with its displayed artworks including those made by great painters such as Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin Georgia O?keefe, Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Besides the museum?s permanent and changing exhibits, it also has a reference library on fine arts as well as an interpretative center about the museum?s collections.

Recently, the museum welcomed the addition of the Jane & Arthur Stieren Center of Exhibitions, which was designed by Jean-Paul Viguier and consequently adds 45,000 sq. ft. of gallery space to the museum as well as a sculpture garden. One of the highlights of this new wing is an innovative multi-layered design for its glass roofing, which allows visitors to view artworks in different levels of lighting.
