The Mount Independence State Historic Site is considered as the most important and most interesting historic site in Vermont, being the main Revolutionary fortification on Vermont Soil.

It is accessible only by road coming from the south. With a 200-feet elevation above the lake and the challenges in its accessibility, it became a significant factor in the Americans? defense against an attack from Britain in 1776 and 1777. Before the Europeans discovered it, native people flocked to the site because of its abundance of food resources from East Creek and Lake Champlain.

After a series of events involving attacks against the Americans, another site was considered for their new fortification. But in July 18, 1776, news about the signing of the Declaration of Independence reached them. On July 18, after reading the document to the troops, the site was christened as Mount Independence.
