In his desire to help the townspeople from the winter blues, Craig O. Burt set up the first ever winter carnival in 1921. The event featured several games and entertainment including tobogganing and ski jumping. The carnival continued to grow each year, and by 1935, it has slowly become one of the most-awaited events and involved thrilling races in cross-country skiing. The event soon rose to popularity and attracted visitors from all over the country. During the war, the celebrations were discontinued, and it wasn?t until a few decades later, in 1974, that the carnival was reopened. The Stowe Winter Carnival still remains one of the most celebrated times of the year in the State. This year, it will feature more exciting events such as ice carving competitions, events for children, and more winter sports activities.
