The only remaining historic fort in the United States that is still in use as an active military post is Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. It is located at Old Point Comfort, Virginia Peninsula?s southernmost tip.

Established in 1819, the fort served as the main line of defense of the channel between Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay. This navigational channel is located at the confluence of three rivers: Elizabeth, James and Nansemond. The site was identified as a strategic defensive position by Captain Christopher Newport, who led the exploration in the area during the colonial days of Virginia. The six-sided fort is completely surrounded by a moat.

Fort Union stands as a living symbol for slave emancipation during the Civil War period. The fort is currently being used by the United States Army.
