The George Washington Masonic National Memorial stands over 100 meters in Alexandria, Virginia. Shaped like the Lighthouse of Alexandria, its cornerstone was laid in 1923. However, it was fully constructed 9 years later. Designed by Helmle and Corbett, the building features a Classic, Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian Style.
Built by over 2,000,000 American Freemasons, it is privately funded but it is open to the public for free. Today, it has become not just a memorial, but a tourist attraction and historically relevant destination as well. It has a research center, library, a community center, and a performing arts center. It is a site for banquets, celebration, and meetings for Masonic lodges and organizations. But, above all, it is mainly a memorial to give honor to first US President George Washingotn, the man who was able to exemplify what Freemasons are.
