The Mill Mountain Zoo was first operated by the city of Roanoke, Virginia during its first 24 years. Later on in 1976, the city gave up its operation to the Roanoke Jaycees. In 1988, the zoo was further turned over to a non-profit organization known as the Blue Ridge Zoological Society (BRZS). To this day the BRZS still promotes and manages the operations of the Mill Mountain Zoo.

The name of the zoo was derived from its location, the Mill Mountain in Roanoke. There are a lot of animals and attractions to enjoy within the zoo. The zoo had notable was home to some notable animals including crowd favorites since it started its operations. Included the list of notable animals are Frump Frump, an African Elephant, Ruby a Siberian Tiger who was one of the main attractions until her death in 2006, Oops ? a Japanese macaque who escaped her cage and was covered by national news before she was recaptured.
There are a lot of animals to discover inside the zoo, both adults and kid will surely enjoy the both its entertainment and educational value.
