During the American civil war, the state of Virginia became one of the most pivotal areas of conflict. And in here, the city of Richmond experienced some of the experienced some of the fiercest fighting during the war, with more than 30 battles occurring in and out of the city.

The Richmond National Battlefield Park, located near the outskirts of the city serves as a memorial, not only of the battles, but also of the soldier who have died in these conflicts. The park covers several of these battlefields, such as Beaver Dam creek and Gaines? Mill. There are also several smaller visitor centers on the other sites not within the parks grounds. Here, visitors can see some of the actual equipment used by both sides during the conflict.
