At first glance, there?s really nothing special with the Tombstone House. However, looking closely to it, visitors would notice that it is made of actual tombstones. Built in 1934 by Oswald Young, this building used 2200 old tombstones that he bought for just $45.

Young acquired the tombstones when the city of Petersburg removed the markers for those who died during the siege of Petersburg in 1864 to 1865. It was a measure that the council saw fit so they can save on maintenance costs. Most of the tombstones belong to the Union soldiers who were interred at the Poplar Grove Cemetery.

The walls and the walkway are made of the tombstones. People also believe that the Tombstone House is haunted.
