The Jefferson Memorial is one of the most elegant landmarks in Washington. To pay homage to America?s third President Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed a commission in 1934 to construct a memorial for America?s founding father much like the Lincoln Memorial. The architectural monument was designed by John Russel Pope using neo-classical theme, since Jefferson supported classical architecture. The Jefferson Memorial is a domed roof with several huge columns, patterned from the Pantheon in Rome.

Sculpted by Rudolph Evans, the 19 ft. / 6 m. tall statue of Jefferson is made in bronze. Its interior walls have engraved writings from the Declaration of Independence as well as his other written works. Jefferson Memorial is open everyday with free admission.
