A combined zoo and aquarium, the Point of Defiance Zoo and Aquarium or PDZA is owned by Metro Parks Tacoma. The zoo and aquarium is home to over 9,000 specimens representing 367 different animal species and still growing. In 1905 the zoo was founded later on the aquarium in 1935 near the Commencement Bay then relocated within the area where the zoo lies. Both the zoo and aquarium are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums meaning they both are within the standards of the organization.

The zoo welcomes everyone to its educational and fun activities where you can opt to join the zoo?s different fun filled adventures. Included in the exhibits are Asian Forest Sanctuaries, Rocky Shores, Arctic Tundras, Red Wolves and many other interesting exhibits.

The zoo used to be a home of belugas, however in 2009, Qannik one of the two belugas died due to blood infection. Its partner was sent to another aquarium for further care. Now, there is no more beluga under the care of the zoo, instead the former home of the whales are now the sanctuary of many harbor seals.
