The San Juan Historical Museum houses the historical accounts of both Friday Harbor and San Juan dating back to 1894. The grounds of the museum cover the old 445-acre expansion of the James King farmhouse. The farm has eight buildings, with four of them being currently used by the museum. The original farmhouse consisted of the carriage house, root cellar, milk house, a barn, the San Juan County Jail, the Scribner log cabin, and Etta Egeland Resource Center. These remaining structures are now used by the museum to store old artifacts and exhibitions depicting the old San Juan and Friday Harbor area.

There are dozens of features inside the San Juan Historical Museum. Aside from displaying exhibits and old documents of the area, the museum welcomes visitors who are interested in the history of the old place. Visitors will get a chance to see the exhibits of thousand artifacts at the Resource Center. The exhibits are categorized into five areas: John McMillan and Rocher Harbor; Argyle Wagon Road: Friday?s Harbor?s Oldest Neighborhood; Salmon Memories: The history of fishing in the San Juans; Law & Disorder; and 100 Years of Exploration and Discovery at the UW Friday Harbor ads.
Historians can access a wide collection of research material of the old area ? from old photographs, to oral accounts taken from the Island residents, newspaper archives, and other extensive resources. Requests for appointments can be made in advance through phone and email.

The museum also holds several events for the delight of the visitors and out-of-towners. The museum grounds accept guided tours through reservations. For normal visits, the place operates from Wednesday until Sunday. Visitors can also enjoy listening to great music during the museum?s launch of the Lawn Summer Concert Series.
