Coal House Rating: None

West Virginia Attractions / Landmarks / Places > Williamson Email This Bookmark Print
The Coal House found in Williamson, West Virginia is the first of its kind in the area. It was constructed to build a lasting symbol of the profitable coal fields in the town. However, despite being called a ?house?, it has never been a residence from the time it was built in 1933 until today.

There may already be other buildings made of coal in West Virginia, but the Coal House is the only one made entirely of coal. Its walls are 2 feet thick, and measures 65 tons in weight. The exterior is also varnished, so it could withstand the harsh outdoor elements.

In 2010, the Coal House caught fire, which damaged its interiors, but didn?t do harm to its overall structure. However, the group that owns the building still says that they will rebuild it.
