One of the most mysterious things about the former West Virginia Penitentiary is that until today, no official architectural drawing has been found about the site. As such, the only clues to the original plans for the penitentiary can only be drawn from what little data is provided by an 1867 report that was submitted by the Gothic-styled penitentiary?s Board of Directors.
Today, the penitentiary is most famous for its annual costumed Elizabethtown Festival as well as its variety of paranormal tours. With Thriller Thursdays, guests below 18 years old are invited to an exciting three-hour ghost hunt that ends at midnight. Each group is limited to thirty guests. Also popular is the PPI or Private Paranormal Investigation tour, which was previously referred to as Night Tours.
