Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail is a network of community-managed trails between the Potomac River and the Allegheny Highlands in the upper Ohio River basin. The trail connects Chesapeake Bay to the Laurel Heights in Pennsylvania connecting up numerous present hiking trails and historical sites into an 830-mile trail. Through five geographical regions, the assorted trail segments allow the hikers to enjoy and explore the trail?s natural, cultural and historical features, which offer a wide range of recreational and educational opportunities.

The trail was designated as a National Scenic Trail corridor in 1983 as an amendment by the National System Trails Act. Currently, the trail has three main sections, namely, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, where a beautiful winter landscape (ideal for skiing and snowshoeing) can be enjoyed. It stretches 184.5 miles of the Potomac River from Georgetown, Washington, to Cumberland, Maryland. The Mount Vermont Trail in Virginia, which extends 18 miles from Roslyn to Mount Vernon, towards the banks of Potomac River. And lastly, the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail which stretches for 70 miles in Pennsylvania to Conemaugh Gorge. All of which are considered as beginner to advanced terrains.

Along the trail, hikers will pass sites of national heritage attractions from colonial settlements to homes of America?s founding fathers not to mention the battlefields where historical battles took place. Recognized to be an amazing way to learn about America, from the past to the present. The trails are also part of America?s heritage from the railroads of Allegheny Mountains which is now succeeded by the Great Allegheny Passage to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal now considered to be America?s most-visited national park.
