Standing proudly at the heart of capital city of Charleston, the West Virginia State Capitol is the seat of government of the state of West Virginia. It currently houses the Office of the Governor of West Virginia and the West Virginia Legislature. The building was designed by no other than renowned architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the state capitols of Minnesota and Arkansas, the US Treasury Building, and the US Supreme Court in Washington DC.
The capitol features a combination of Colonial Revival and Italian Renaissance. The main material used in construction was Indiana marble. At 293 feet from base to the tip of its gold-tipped dome, this is the tallest building in West Virginia. The building is open for public guided tours, during which visitors can behold the majestic architecture and its design elements such as the statue of Abraham Lincoln, several fountains and the nearby West Virginia Governor?s Mansion.
