Tourists seem to be constantly amused with a museum where sprockets meet rockets. Just when everybody thought that space rockets do not have any connection with the invention of bicycles, a visit to Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycle Museum will prove him wrong.

The museum was built to show the idea that the invention of bicycles have inspired the Wright brothers to pursue the making of an airplane which later lead to the invention of space suits and rockets. It may sound farfetched to some, but most tourists are convinced on the logic.

Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycle Museum also serves as a tribute to their local space hero who was chosen to be the next American to orbit the earth in 1962. NASA, however, discovered his heart condition which led to Slayton?s suspension for 13 years. After few years of perseverance and patience, he was finally allowed to make it into space after he joined the Apollo-Sovuz mission.

Slayton?s spacesuit was laid out in a sealed coffin, beside the numerous number of bikes exhibited to show Sparta?s role as the bicycle capital of the world.
