The Fort Fetterman State Historical Site is known to be the site of Fort Fetterman, which is best known for having operated the longest along the Bozeman Trail. The area was very notable due to its undesirable location, proving very harsh conditions for the servicemen stationed there.

Built in 1867, the primary goal of Fort Fetterman was to protect the Bozeman Trail and the other nearby routes. Soon after its establishment, the Black Hills War against the Arapaho, Lakota, and Cheyenne tribes erupted. It was abandoned in 1882, when the wars have ended.

Today, the Fort Fetterman State Historical Site has been restored and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is open to the public who can view the ruins of the old fort?s buildings and structures.
