The Boll Weevil Monument is a historic statue in Enterprise, Alabama. It was erected in 1919 in celebration of the local?s appreciation of the insect boll weevil, for its help in the area?s agriculture and economy,
The Boll Weevil Monument was erected after the boll weevil got the local farmers to switch from cotton growing to peanut farming. Apparently, the boll weevil destroyed the crops in 1918, so another farmer thought about convincing the other farmers to try growing peanuts instead. The venture has proven to be quite lucrative, so they looked at the tragic event when the insect destroyed their crops in a positive way, and erected a monument for something that paved the way for the local agricultural industry?s new found success.
