The Fort Payne Depot Museum, located in northeastern Alabama, was constructed in 1891. The museum is a non-profit organization and currently collaborates with the City of Fort Payne to present the city?s heritage and culture to the community.

The Fort Payne Depot was used the main stop for passengers. According to historical facts, there used to be two express mail trains and about six passenger trains passing through every day. After its last operation, several organizations worked to protect the depot. Now, several volunteers are doing their best to preserve not only the Depot and railroad memorabilia but also the historical documents, items, artifacts and more from the surrounding areas, across the United States or even in other countries.

The goal of Fort Payne Depot and museum is to collect and preserve the artifacts and any historical memorabilia to the public. All the exhibits of the DeKalb County area is used to educate the public about the. Just like any other museums, the Fort Payne Depot Museum collects local history artifacts, including the display of the railroad caboose. They were once used on nearly every freight train. However, the use of the railroad caboose has declined over the years and was seldom seen on trains, except on local and smaller rails. Other highlights in the museum include Native American artifacts and special-interest collection.

The Fort Payne Depot Museum is open to public, giving visitors the opportunity to have more knowledge about the history and heritage of their community. The museum is also open to membership especially for those who frequently visit the depot. For tourist, civic groups, school field trips, may have their guided tours by dropping by during office hours at the Fort Payne Depot Museum.

The exact location of the Fort Payne Depot Museum is closest to the City Park in downtown Fort Payne. It opens to visitors every Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, excluding National holidays.
