The Horse Pens 40 is an outdoor nature park in Steele, Alabama. It is situated on top of the state?s third highest mountain, the Chandler Mountain. It is best known by rock climbers and hikers.
The Horse Pens 40 is situated in a historic site used for thousands of years already. It initially served as a venue for the peace treaty signing between the Cherokee and Creek tribes. It also served the local folks as a natural fortress during stressful times and sheltered village area during the early years. The Confederate Army also used it as a storage site for supplies.
Today, the Horse Pens 40 offers visitors some wildlife viewing and excellent bouldering opportunities, with the site being one of the most concentrated boulder fields in the planet.
