The John McMahon House is a historic mansion in Courtland, Alabama. It was built in 1828 with the earliest documented owner being John McMahon, a Virginia native. McMahon moved to Courtland so he can manage the local branch of the Bierne and McMahon Huntsville mercantile firm.
The John McMahon House is a Federal style mansion. It served as McMahon?s and wife, Harriet Shackelford?s home for quite some time. It is also said that federal raiding parties also used the house as a headquarters on different times. The house also has some reminders of the Civil War, with its bullet holes that are visible around the front door.
The John McMahon House is also noted for being involved in the first attempts to preserve historical homes by private individuals and groups. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
