The Swayne Hall is a historic building located inside the Talladega College campus in Talladega, Alabama. It is the college?s oldest building, completed in 1857. It was originally built for a Baptist men?s college and was later acquired by the American Missionary Association with the aid of the Freedmen?s Bureau.
The Swayne Hall is historically significant for a number of reasons. For one, the completion of the building marked the beginnings of the only institution in Alabama that is capable of offering a true undergraduate education to African Americans. The idea is quite ironic, though, since it was mostly constructed using slave labor. The building also marked the creation of the only liberal arts college for blacks in the state.
