The Wales Site is an archaeological site in Wales, Alaska. It is closely related to the Birnirk Culture period, with unearthed evidences showing the earliest recognizable manifestation of the modern Eskimo culture in the state of Alaska dating 500 to 900 AD.
Unlike other archaeological sites in the country, the Wales Site also have a present-day Native Alaskan community on site, giving great comparison points between the past and present cultures. The site also features some mounds and a midden.
The Wales Site is the very first location where experts found evidence of the Thule Culture. It was declared as a National Historic Landmark District in December 1962, way before it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
