The Phoenix Zoo was established as Robert Maytag’s personal venture in 1962. He first formed the Arizona Zoological Society to spearhead the creation of a local zoo. But, he died just months before it opened in November 1962. The zoo initially opened as “Maytag Zoo” but was changed into the Phoenix Zoo to make it more recognizable to the community. Today, it continues to be a nonprofit zoo and is known to be the largest of its kind in the U.S operating on a 125-acre lot within the Papago Park. Also known as a Phoenix Point of Pride, it has on display up to 1,300 animals. It also boasts of a 2.5-mile walking trail that is sectioned into 4 themes namely, The Arizona Trail, The Africa Trail, The Tropics Trail, and the Children’s Trail.
