The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) was inspired by an Australian expatriate artist John Power. He left his personal wealth to the University of Sydney to continue his mission of teaching Australians contemporary arts. The University, together with Power Bequest, established the museum in memory of Power and to continue his living legacy.

Way back in early 18th century, the present location of MCA was owned by native Eora people of Gadigal nation. It was historical itself because the 1788 first landing of First Fleet in Port Jackson happened exactly to the place where MCA is located at the present. The structure was initially owned by maritime unit where Maritime Services Board was constructed. When it was relocated to other site, the State Government generously gave the parcel of land to University of Sydney, and that was when the MCA started to operate in 1991. The MCA building was inspired by architectural works of a government architect named Andrew Anderson.

The MCA offers high quality and treasure collections of Contemporary Arts as it advocates to the museum goers the appreciation of the masterpieces of contemporary artists. These collections can be copied interactively by sketching on the spot. People can request for materials and canvass needed as the museum encourages people to also appreciate and be informed of the contemporary collection of arts. However, no picture taking inside the galleries is allowed unless it is permitted by the museum administration.

The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM except on Sundays and Australia?s public holidays, unless officially requested, approved, and appointed. There are also occasional off-site exhibits which are commonly extended to universities and other institutions in Australia.

Today, the MCA gallery is temporarily closed to the public until early 2012 but an off-site program is running at The National Art School Gallery which opens at the same schedule as MCA.
