Sydney Harbour Bridge, affectionately known as the Coathanger because of its arch-based design with 6 million hand driven rivets , was opened on March 19, 1932 by Premier Jack Lang, after six years of construction. It also has huge hinges to absorb the expansion caused by the hot Sydney sun. You will see them on either side of the bridge at the footings of the Pylons. The steel bridge carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge offers breathtaking views of the harbor, the city and surrounding areas. A lovely suburb called Kirribilli can be found on the other side of the bridge. For those who walk across, you can enjoy the area with many lunch options, including a little seafood restaurant called Garfish.
