The Colorado State Capitol is one of the most noticeable structures in Denver. The structure was built with the rare stone Colorado Rose Onyx. All the known reserves of this stone has actually gone to the construction of the capitol. It also uses a Neoclassical Style of Design and Architecture, which is similar to Washington's capitol building.
In 1908, its dome was plated using 200 ounces of 24-karat gold leaf, commemorating the brave miners and pioneers who helped Colorado establish itself. Decades later, 47.5 ounces of gold was further applied. It is interesting to know, however, that the dome was originally made of copper. It was just swapped for gold in 1908 because of the copper's high probability of oxidation.
Even in its busier area today, the structure will be very hard to miss as it is surrounded by numerous historical streets such as Pennsylvania Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, and Grant Street.
