The Anacostia Community Museum, located in Washington DC, is the Smithsonian Institution?s museum focusing on African American history and culture. It offers exhibits, workshops, film showing, lectures, and educational programs that help interpret the black history starting from the 1800?s.
It first opened in 1967 within a converted movie theatre. It was the country?s first federally funded neighbourhood museum. First called the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum, it changed its name to Anacostia Museum in 1987 to indicate its preservation of African American history and culture within the country and the entire world.
Currently, it has about 6,000 objects on display, including archaeological materials, furniture, textiles, photographs, videos, audio tapes, and musical instruments. Its archives contain 10,000 volumes including relevant publications and research files.
