The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, located in one of the oldest ports in the country, is a preservation and educational center dedicated to maritime archaeology and local area history and culture.
The museum offers a variety of educational opportunities and provides aid to local and national preservation efforts especially in the subject of maritime archaeology. It is also a safe depository of historical artifacts that come from the residents and former residents of the area.
The operation of the museum itself stemmed from the preservation efforts for the St. Augustine Lighthouse that was built in 1874. After a devastating fire in 1970 the keeper house was restored as a museum and opened to the public. The tower was opened to access in 1993.
