Hiking/walking trails near Juneau Alaska

There are many great trails here in Juneau but if you come in on a cruise ship there are a couple good ones really close to town.

If you have about an hour take the "Flume" trail which is accessed at the top of town down Basin Road. About 1/4 mile maybe down Basin Road off to the left you will see the sign for the trail and a small walking bridge across the river. Follow the wooden path for a beautiful nature trail only about 3/4 mile long. It will dump you out in a residential neighborhood above our high school and cemetary. You can walk down through the neighborhoods and work your way back to town or go back the way you came.

If you have 4-5 hours you can follow Basin Road all the way to the end, past the mining museum, and do the Perseverance Trail. It can take about 3 hrs round trip but will really get you into the thick of the Alaskan wilderness and takes you near some mining ruins as well as the "Glory Hole", a gigantic hole behind Mt. Roberts left from the gold mining.

Lastly, if you have 2-3hrs you can hike up Mt. Roberts and then ride the tram down for only $5 or spend at least that much in the gift shop at the top and ride down for free with your receipt. Much cheaper than the near $30 for the tram's up/down price and you get some exercise at the same time! The trail head can be accessed to the right on Basin Road, just across from the entrance to the Flume trail mentioned earlier.

That is one of the hikes I do a few time a week in the summer. You can go to Gold Ridge and then on to Mt. Roberts. For those without time or the ability to do the entire round trip from Basin Road, ride the tram up, hike to Gold Ridge, and take the tram down. The hike to Gold Ridge is not easy for some, but worth it.

One hike to add: Go on the Perseverance Trail, but take the Nugget Creek Trail when it branches off - much nicer towards the end than the Perseverance. Or, go to the end of Perseverance, hike back to the Nugget and hike it, then back to the ship. You need a few extra hours, but if you hike fast......

Just don't miss your cruise ship...and if you do miss it, please don't call the Coast Guard asking for assistance in getting on!!! (Don't ask me how I know).
