My vote would be for Prescott, winters are bearable and summers are much cooler than PHX, etc.

I would do something along the Wickenburg route. Small town with everything available but close enough to a major city if you really needed something. Temperatures run hotter in the large cities AND you have to deal with stupid people more.

Cottonwood?

Any comments on Cottonwood?

We were there in March. I liked the area. It was close enough to Sedona that the wife was happy. Had a bit of the "small town" feel to it.

Didn't get a chance to look at Prescott. It is on my list.

I agree with AZvoiceman Prescott is great for the mild weather...Phx is fun in the winter months and close enough to visit.
