Best food in Atlanta?

I'll be in Atlanta long enough to get dinner, breakfast, and lunch and wanted to know where is the best place to eat dinner? Breakfast will probably be at the hotel and lunch will be quick on the way to the airport. Unless its really worth it then maybe I'll stick around for lunch and chance a close encounter with the TSA.

Forgot to add that I'm open to most kinds of food so long as its:

a) cooked (sushi rolls are the only exception)
b) not from the digestive tract or nervous system (blame Bill Cosby for turning me off to those)
c) recognizable as food.

I was thinking of going to Mulligan's for the burgers, but it says they are closed. Anyways, I appreciate the help!

Are you going to be downtown? In Alpharetta? Near Atlantic Station? Atlanta traffic is no joke so, unless the traffic gods are with you, you won't be able to dash anywhere quickly.

In the Cumberland Mall area, I like Stoney River Steak House and the OK Cafe. It's not a quick trip, but out in the burbs, I really like Dreamland BBQ. They have excellent Pecan Pie

Traffic sounds like LA. I was going to take my wife to Bubba Gumps once down on the Santa Monica pier except traffic looked like a nightmare and the pier was packed with pedestrians. Headed out of LA and decided to save that for the next time we were there.

Is the food in Atlanta this bad? Do I need to drive outside city limits to find something good? I'm trying to avoid the tourist trap types and find the good food.

Similar to the type that I found in Texas. If you are ever in Denton Texas during the spring, the best bbq is just off the city square in a little shack. Never had any bbq that good before or since.

I'll keep that one in mind in case I ever get back there again. With the limited time and input I ended up going to "six feet under" food was hot, somewhat different, and only hardened two arteries while enjoying the chips they make there.

Also went to the "Tamarind Seed Thai Bistro" and had a decent plate of Pad Thai. The only complaint is when I asked for 4-peppers hot and got retirement home spicy instead.

Also, Atlanta has the worst airport (tied with LAX) for ease of leaving the building. It's worse than a casino .

if you are in midtown, i say go to the vortex. it is an excellent burger place and is known for their outrageous burgers.

The only negative is that they allow smoking inside.

The Vortex DOES have great food and some good beers, but they can be loud and smoky. No reason not to go if that doesn't bother you.

Food 101 has never disappointed me - I had a really good Kobe burger there two days ago
The Flying Biscuit has awesome breakfast
Front Page News is good for food and has a decent beer list, can be noisy
South City Kitchen was on the Food Network and is supposed to be great (lunch/dinner - closed in between)
