That's how I do it, then I sit down with the guy, tell him what I want, sometimes they make you pay a deposit, just to make sure they are getting paid to work, the last ones I got went through a couple of revisions.
It's a cool process. I can't draw, my stick figures are terrible, but seeing something go form an idea to a permanent addition to you body is awesome.
